When you design your project, you should be attentive of how the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) affect the placement of products. The application, as it relates to grating, states that grates in walking surfaces have slot openings 1/2" or less in one direction. Grates with elongated opening will be placed with long dimension perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel.
